In early 2005 volunteers from the Initiative carried out an exhaustive survey of all the roads in Saffron Walden to identify "At any time" signs next to double yellow lines which the Department for Transport says are no longer required.
The results of the survey were that:
A total of 232 individual "At any time" signs can be removed
A total of 132 metal poles can be removed
A total of 52 composite signs need to be changed
In 2008 Essex County Council Highways started removing some of the redundant signs and poles in the conservation area.
