WALDEN 1647
Celebrating the Birth of English Democracy
Written by Martyn Everett
Saffron Walden was briefly at the centre of the political storm that shook England during the English Civil War.
In this book, local historian Martyn Everett provides a detailed examination of the events that shook the town during those turbulent years - including the rise of the "Agitators" in the New Model Army, the debates held by the soldiers in the church, and the Battle of Linton - as ordinary people moved onto the stage of history.
Published by Ragged Robin Press, 72pages, illustrated A5 paperback
'The Declaration of the Armie'
A facsimile edition of five pamphlets originally issued during April and May 1647 supporting the cause of the New Model Army in their debates with Parliament. As such these publications offer a unique resource for the period and provide an insight into the events in Saffron Walden.
Three of the publications have been scanned from the original copies held by Saffron Walden Museum. Two others have been sourced from the British Library.
These facsimiles will be preceded by a scholarly essay on the period by former Town Librarian, Martyn Everett, and a bibliographic survey of the original publications by Bruce Tice.
